One of the most desirable outcomes of the music theory program at the Suzuki Music Institute of Dallas is composition. It is a given that at some point during their studies students try to write their own original music. We see this as a very positive development and encouraged this activity in every way.
For the serious composition student SMID offers formal composition lessons as an option. These lessons enable students to explore and realize their ideas, develop technique and expand their knowledge of styles and sounds and almost always culminate with the production of a score of a new work. Some composition students perform their compositions at concerts at SMID.
The theory and composition laboratory at SMID is equipped with up-to-date iMacs installed with cutting-edge music programs, including Sibelius 7.
Some SMID student composers have entered their compositions in local and national competitions. Several student works have done exceedingly well in both local and national competitions and, in one instance, a work by Dara Li for Symphony Orchestra entitled “Bosque del Apache” has been performed by a the Austin Symphony.
During the summer we will offer a Composition Workshop.
